Last week, we reported that Marlena’s Bar (488 Hayes) was being bought by three unnamed owners. Today, we have an update from the owners themselves.
The bar is being purchased by the trio of Matt Conway, Anthony Healy-London, and Josh McAdam. Conway is currently the bar manager at Absinthe, and has previously worked at Nopa and Comstock Saloon, while Healy-London is part of the team behind several bars around San Francisco including Churchill, Bloodhound, and Double Dutch. Conway and Healy-London will be in charge of the bar’s day-to-day operations, while McAdam, a childhood friend of Healy-London’s, will work behind the scenes.
Healy-London tells Hayeswire that they will be giving the bar a new name, but haven’t yet decided what that will be. They’re also keeping some details of their concept close to the vest, but say they are aware of Marlena’s history and status in Hayes Valley (and the city, for that matter), and want to be respectful of that as they take over. Healy-London writes:
“We are in discussion with Marlena/Gary about what of the Marlena’s traditions will continue. We understand what Marlena’s has meant (and continues to mean) to this neighborhood and we are sensitive to that in our decision-making process. We are really excited to be joining a neighborhood that we already love and know very well.”
He adds that they will be beginning the remodel in March, and have a tentative goal of opening the bar in late April. As usual, we will keep you updated as we learn more details.
